The Dance of the Wheel of the Year
This is the title of a song I wrote, which describes the cycle of the year as marked by the seasons and the 8 'celtic' or 'pagan' festivals. I created a poster illustrating it, as you can see below. You can order a copy from me for £4 + P+P. You can listen to a recording of the song by clicking here
Many believe these festivals were widely honoured by native people in Britain and parts of northern Europe for generations, before Christianity came and...altered them! (This is a highly political subject!)
The 8 festivals described in my song, (1 per verse) are shown here alongside their Christian parallels:
Winter Solstice : Christmas
Imbolc : Candlemas
Spring Equinox : Easter
Beltane : May Day (not Christian)
Summer Solstice : St.John's
Lugnasadh : Lammas
Autumn Equinox : Michaelmas
Samhain : Halloween or Martinmas
I've been celebrating these pagan/celtic festivals since I was about 19. From the time of the road protest camp at Twyford Down, I lived as part of a nomadic group of people known as the Dongas Tribe. We travelled on foot all over the Westcountry, to live out and demonstrate our belief in not being car-dependent. We took part in several other road protest camps and lived a simple outdoor way of life, around an open fire, carrying our shelters with us, all through the year.
We held gatherings for every one of these seasonal festivals, along our journey for about 7 years. We welcomed many people to celebrate them round the fire with us, in beautiful natural places, and to share our food, acoustic music, singing, and Breton dancing.
So, having really lived into these festivals, I wrote a song about them in 1997. I'd love you to listen to it - click here.
Do you celebrate any of these, or would like to mark these 'feast-days'? If so, I hope my song will enhance your connection to them. For each festival, I picked a God or Goddess from varied origins to express the energy of that time of year. I hope you enjoy it. It's not your typical pop song ; its more of a trancey ballad.
Give me a call if you'd like a copy of the poster. Warm wishes, Selena ~
